Bishop's Stortford 39 Leicester Lions 12

The Lions started brightly, on what was a very windy day, moving the ball well in attack and forcing turnovers in defence. Against the run of play though, it was Stortford who scored first on 16 minutes, when a Dan Lewis chip was gathered in midfield by the Stortford cover and Chris Smith was sent clear to finish. Fly half Tom Walker added the conversion and then extended the lead to 10 points with a penalty on 29 minutes. (10-0)

The Lions had a number of visits to the Stortford 22 but a lack of accuracy cost them and on 32 minutes the home side scored their second try of the half when Nick Hankin went over out wide. Again Walker was successful with the conversion and he rounded a very good first half with another penalty just before half time to give his side a commanding 20-0 lead at the break.

Any chance of a comeback for the Lions was dealt a huge blow straight after the break when a loose kick from Lewis was gathered by Tom Mills who broke a number of disappointing tackle attempts to run the ball back some 30 metres. When finally tackled the ball found its way out to Francis Moore to score in the corner. Once again Walker was on target with the conversion. If it wasn't already, the game was certainly over 6 minutes later, when James Ayrton won the race to touch down a clever chip kick from Walker, who then added the easy conversion. (34-0)

The Lions finally got on the scoreboard as the game approached the final quarter, when Oliver Taylor pounced on a loose ball following a Stortford handling error and he fed James Stubbs to run in untouched. Having replaced Dan Lewis at fly-half, substitute Luke Bouchier converted excellently from out wide. (34-7)

The Lions dominated the last quarter but despite having the vast majority of both possession and territory the home sides' outstanding defence held firm and it was indeed them who got the next score, when Nick Hankin intercepted a long pass to sprint in for a try out wide. (39-7)

To the Lions credit, despite the contest being well over, and frustration mounting from a string of Stortford penalties in the second half (14 in a row that went unpunished in fact) , their continued attacking effort finally yielded a score when a neat move was finished well in the corner by Malelli Satala.

A disappointing result but the Lions remain one place (and 6 points) above the relegation zone.

Head coach Gareth Collins commented: ''A really frustrating day to be honest. We prepared well in the week and we started the game well, winning some of the little battles that we focused on. The game just got away from us based on some moments. Late on in the contest we were attacking how we wanted to and we created huge pressure but unfortunately it was too late by that time. We have to put this behind us quickly though - our survival is still in our hands but we've got three huge games now.''
