Moseley edge out the Lions in a muddy affair

Moseley edge out the Lions in a muddy affair

Gareth Collins23 Dec 2024 - 19:40

Moseley 27 - 10 Leicester Lions

A very heavy pitch and strong wind put an end to any free-flowing rugby that the Lions supporters may have been looking forward to seeing and instead a physical battle was edged by the more clinical home side.

The Lions had the breeze at their backs first half and through virtue of their kicking game, enjoyed the majority of early territory. The Lions, despite having the much smaller pack, were also very dominant in the scrum, winning a number of penalties and free kicks. Unfortunately the lineout was proving very difficult for the away side though, so any entries in to the Moseley 22 went unpunished.

Moseley came closest to opening the scoring, when a slick move off a lineout freed winger Aquile Smith out wide but he was denied a certain try by an excellent last ditch tap tackle by a flying Toby Cousins. Luke Bouchier then did finally get the first score, a penalty, on 23 minutes (0-3).

Both sides were finding handling understandably difficult so exchanged kicks in an attempt to win territory. When a Moseley box kick landed short of Toby Cousins, and stuck in the muddy ground, Moseley centre Ollie Allsop was able to hack through to score under the posts. Jack Jolly converted to give the home side a half time lead (7-3).

Just 3 minutes after the turnaround Moseley were over again. Following a strong maul, Allsopp turned provider with a short ball to his centre partner Morgan Adderley-Jones who went under the posts untouched. Jolly converting again (14-3).

The Lions then experienced a period of sustained pressure in Moseley territory, and following a number of opportunities, and infringements from the home side, Reuben Logan picked up from another dominant scrum and crashed over under the posts. Luke Bouchier added the extras to reduce the arrears (10-14).

Moseley's lead was pushed out to 7 points when Jolly added a penalty on the hour mark but the contest looked like it could still go either way going in to the last quarter. The Lions pushed but two raking 50:22s from Moseley's fly-half Tommy Taylor pinned them back and another Jolly penalty with 10 minutes to play meant that the Lions had to chase a losing point.

In desperation of trying to get their hands on the ball in the closing stages the Lions conceded a string of penalties that gave Moseley a 5m lineout from which they launched another effective maul that James Randall dotted down from. Jolly converting once again to give the final score a slightly unfair reflection of the contest (27-10).

Head coach Gareth Collins commented: ''It was always going to be tough for us against a big Moseley side, but especially in those conditions. Our scrum did an unbelievable job to be fair but our attack really let us down. We didn't win enough clean ball and didn't dominate enough collisions to challenge their defence. They have a lot of experience in their side, to go along with their physicality, and they just controlled things better than us on the day.''
