Lions lose try fest in the North West

Gareth Collins16 Oct - 22:00

Sedgley Park 52 Lions 29

The Lions travelled to Park Lane for the sixth game of the season, still searching for their first win. Despite scoring 5 tries, it wasn't to be as Sedgley punished the Lions' mistakes to run in 8 tries of their own.

The Lions were playing up the slope first half and their inability to exit their 22 meant they spent the opening exchanges defending their line. Sedge's second row Bob Birtwell powered over for the opening try after 8 minutes and soon afterwards winger Bertie Bradshaw finished off out wide following some neat handling from the Tigers' backs. Full-back Oli Glasse converted both scores to give the home side a 14-0 lead.

The Lions hit back when Lui Natui ripped the ball in the tackle and raced through to score, but Bradshaw struck again as he broke through a number of weak tackle attempts out wide (19-5). The Lions responded again with a catch-and-drive try, finished off by Ben Park, narrowing Sedge's lead to 19–10, but centre Joe Bedlow scored an impressive 50 metre solo effort from a kick return to restore the home sides two score advantage. The conversion by Glasse made it 26—10 at the break.

Just two minutes into the second half, Bradshaw burst through the middle from a nice strike play to claim his hat-trick, converted by Glasse for 33–10. The Lions responded with a Monty Loggenberg score, the flanker diving over from close range after a number of good phases of attack. Bouchier kicking the extras (33-17).

The Lions were now in the ascendency and a man to the good after the very impressive George Pearson was tackled recklessly in the air. The Lions had a golden opportunity to get themselves back in the contest with a 5m lineout but, as the Lions maul was heading towards the line, the ball was somehow ripped by a defender. The Lions continued to press but when a Bouchier grubber kick was blocked in the Sedge 22 the ball was hacked on by that man Bradshaw who regathered and raced in for his fourth to all but secure the result. Glasse converting (40–17).

Flanker Lewis Bradley then finished off another clean break from a lineout strike move, again converted by Glasse, to make it 47–17 but the Lions continued to press and secured the bonus point score when Joey Patrick finished off from close range after another effective Lions maul. Joey Britton then finished off some more good attack from the Lions, making a neat break on the edge and outpacing the cover to score. Bouchier converted before a final score of the day, from Sedge's scrum half Jacob Tansey, sealed a 52–29 win for the home side.

Head coach Gareth Collins commented: ''A really disappointing day from our perspective. Just as they did here last year, Sedge dominated the breakdown and our inability to exit in the first half really cost us. We did a lot of good things in attack, and scoring 5 tries on the road is fantastic, but we made too many errors and were poor in defence. We'll go away and reflect on it but clearly we need to be much more physical against sides like Sedgley.''
