Lions lose out to last minute penalty.

League Points 1-4

Leicester Lions 14: Tries: Devon Constant (34 mins), Sam Benjamin (38mins); Conversions: Jon Boden (34 mins, 39 mins);

Luctonians 16: Tries: Charlie Grimes (45 mins); Conversions: Louis Silver (46 mins); Penalties: Louis Silver (9 mins, 31 mins, 79 mins)

It was an overcast afternoon, with light drizzle which cleared up as the game proceeded.

The game started with some even play, but Lions conceded penalties which allowed Luctonians to be the first to put points on the board. For Luctonians Louis Silver scored penalties on 9 mins and 31 mins, making the score 0-6.

Towards the end of the first half Lions had a purple patch scoring two tries.

Excellent back play produced tries for Lions on both wings. Devon Constant scored on the left wing on 34 mins, quickly followed by Sam Benjamin scoring on the right wing on 38 mins. Jon Boden added both conversions and Lions had established a good lead. It looked like Lions might have taken control of the game.

Half Time: Leicester Lions 14 Luctonians 6

It did not take Luctonians long to come back into the game in the second half with their winger, Charlie Grimes, taking an interception in his own 22 and having an excellent run to score a try, converted by Louis Silver, to bring Luctonians back into the game after 45 mins.

With the score at 14-13 it looked like it could be either side’s game.

Just when it looked like Lions might hold out for their third victory of the season, some indiscipline by Lions gave away a penalty.

Continued dependable place kicking by Louis Silver for Luctonians meant that the penalty was scored and on 79 mins Luctonians took the lead to make the score 14-16.

Luctonians held on well to give them the victory points.

A closely contested game, with both side having opportunities to win the game.

For the third week in a row Lions have been involved in games which were decided by scoring in the last few minutes, giving them two wins and a defeat.

Leicester Lions’ Director of Rugby, Ken Whitehead, said that this had been a keenly contested game which we could have won. It was obviously disappointing that we did not make the best of our opportunities.

Following this week’s games, Leicester Lions are in fifth position in National League 2 North, and Luctonians in sixth position.
