Leicester Lions were anticipating a tough afternoon against National League 2 North leaders Stourbridge.

It was a cloudy day with steady rain during the two hours before kick-off and for the first half. After the break the rain abated, although the playing surface was still greasy.

Lions soon opened their account with a splendid run leading to full back Ian Smith going over to score a try after 6 minutes.

The remainder of the first half was evenly contested with both sides having opportunities, but two well matched sides defended well.

For Lions Jon Boden added a penalty after 38 minutes to give Lions an 8-0 lead at half time.

At the start of the second half Luke White scored a penalty to open Stourbridge’s account.

A lovely darting try by Lions’ scrum half, Kris McFedries, converted by Jon Boden, opened up Lions’ lead to 15-3.

On 52 minutes Luke White scored his second penalty for Stourbridge to keep them in the game.

On 61 minutes Lions’ Drew Rudkin was red carded.

Soon after it looked like being a player down would have a serious effect on Lions when Stourbridge scored a try by prop Tom Harrison, converted by Luke White, to make the score 15-13.

Lions showed some real class producing exciting flowing rugby, with a superb run down the wing by Sam Benjamin to produce a try, again converted by Jon Boden and make the score 22-13.

With their tails up Lions had a classy five minute period of play. Debutante fly-half, James Grayson, scored a penalty. This was immediately followed by two thundering quick-fire tries by Lions’ winger Devon Constant, with Jon Boden adding one conversion.

This rapid scoring spree made the score 37-13 and a successful afternoon for Lions.

Full Time: Leicester Lions 37 Stourbridge 13

Excellent play by Lions to score five tries, with spirited play by Stourbridge until the game ran away from them in the last fifteen minutes.

Leicester Lions’ Director of Rugby, Ken Whitehead, said that this had been an evenly contested game until we showed some real class scoring three tries in the last fifteen minutes. The mixture of young and experienced players is starting to mold into a side showing real promise.

Following this week’s games, Leicester Lions are in fourth position in National League 2 North and Stourbridge in fifth position.
