Leicester Lions electric start defeats Wharfedale

League Points 0-5

Wharfedale 10: Tries: James Guy (79); Conversions: Tom Barrett (79); Penalties: Tom Barrett (47);

Leicester Lions 24: Tries: Patrick Ryan (2), Devon Constant (4), Henry Clement (10), Alex Smit (57); Conversions: Jon Boden (3, 5);

Leicester Lions were looking for a comeback after last week’s defeat by league leaders Stourbridge.

Wharfedale have one of the most picturesque grounds in the country, based at Threshfield, near Grassington, in the Yorkshire Dales.

Normally one would expect the away team to be a little lethargic following Lions’ trip to the Yorkshire Dales, but that was not the case. Lions shot out of the starting blocks with a dominating performance in the first ten minutes. Three tries in the first ten minutes gave Lions an excellent start.

Lions took advantage, playing with the wind in the first half.

Lions quickly launched an attack and their No 8, Patrick Ryan, ran over for a try after 2 minutes, with Jon Boden adding the conversion.

This was soon followed up by a run by Lions’ winger, Devon Constant, from his own half, to add the second try after 4 minutes, with Boden again adding the conversion.

On 10 minutes an excellent backs’ move by Lions led to their scrum-half, Henry Clement, going over to score their third try after 10 minutes.

With 10 minutes gone the score was 0-19 and Lions had a decisive lead.

Obviously it was not expected that this scoring rate would continue throughout the game. The game settled down into a well contested period where both sides had opportunities, but neither side added to the score line.

On 38 minutes Wharfedale’s Ralph Wellock was yellow carded.

On 47 minutes Wharfedale’s fly-half, Tom Barrett, opened their account with a penalty.

Lions retaliated on 57 minutes with Alex Smit adding their fourth try, with a move from the half-way line, making the score 3-24.

Late in the game some pressure by Wharfedale led to indiscipline by Leicester Lions.

Lions’ Alex Knight was yellow carded on 69 minutes, quickly followed by a yellow card for Lions’ Devon Constant on 72 minutes.

Wharfedale took advantage of the depletion in Lions’ playing strength with a try on 79 minutes by their centre James Guy, with Barrett adding the conversion, making the score 10-24.

A deserved win by Leicester Lions, with some good team play, adapting their game to the windy conditions.

A superb start to the game by Leicester Lions, from which Wharfedale found it difficult to recover.

Leicester Lions’ head coach, Jack Heald, said that he was pleased with the way Lions started off the game and delighted with the way they stuck with their game plan in the second half when the conditions were not in their favour.

Following this week’s games, Leicester Lions are in seventh position in National League 2 North, with Wharfedale propping up the table in bottom position.

Lions’ Devon Constant is leading try scorer in National League 2 North with 13 tries.
