This week Leicester Lions were away at Sedgley Park, based in north Manchester. Following up last week’s win against Wharfedale was always going to be a tough task for Lions against Sedgley Park, who are in the breakaway group contesting the top of the table.

Sedgley Park started off dominating the play and on 2 minutes Park’s hooker Dan Maher opened the scoring with a try, converted by Matt Riley.

On 6 minutes Lions retaliated with a try by wing-forward Simon Johnson, converted by Jon Boden.

Park upped their game and on 16 minutes their wing-forward Will Lees added their second try to make the score 12-7.

On 22 minutes Riley added a penalty for Park.

On 26 minutes forward pressure and good handling led to Park’s scrum-half Callum McShane going over for their third try, with Riley adding the conversion to make the score 22-7.

In the final minutes of the first half Park produced a flowing move which left space for their winger Jamie Harrison to go over, with Riley adding the conversion. This gave Park their fourth try and a bonus point.

Lions started the second half in a much more positive and lively fashion.

On 48 minutes Lions created space and their winger Devon Constant raced over to add their second try, to make the score 29-12.

Park came back putting Lions’ line under pressure and it was not long before their fly-half Rob Holloway crossed the line to add their fifth try and make the score 34-12.

In the last quarter of the game both sides had chances but the defences held out well and there was no further scoring.

A game where Park held the upper hand for much of the play, but Lions competed well and never gave up. Towards the end of the game both sides defended well to prevent further scoring.

A deserved win for Sedgley Park.

Following this week’s games, Leicester Lions are in ninth position in National League 2 North, with Sedgley Park in fourth position, in a tight top of the table group, with Sale FC starting to look favourites to win the league.
