Lions put on a good performance to see off a good Luctonians side

Leicester Lions were made to work the whole game by a Luctonians side who did not give up, and work is what the Lions did.

The game started out as a well fort contest, looked to be a great one to watch. Early confusion by the Lions at set piece led to the 9, Boshoff being dismissed to the sinbin when the referee lost patience with a repeated offence. Luctonians took the opportunity to batter the Leicester line but a strong and determined Lions team held the visitors out.

It took till 17 minutes until first points were on the board through a penalty try for the Lions because of a collapsed scrum which was on its way to being driven over the Luctonians line. The conversion was successful through the boot of Jacob Knight who has taken over the kicking duties in Boden's absence.

Good phase play by the Lions, helped by better retention of the ball compared to previous weeks, allowed pressure to build in the Luctonians half. It was Tom Morris who made the final yards to touch down and Knight converted.

Minutes later Knight himself touched down for the third try following some great play in the backs with the forwards link much improving. Conversion missed. Lions held out strong attacking play from the visitors to go in at half time 19-0 up.

Leicester came out of the changing rooms with a roar and took first blood through power plays in the forwards. It was Tom Cheney to cross from yards out to add the forth try of the afternoon. Minimum of a bonus point in the bag. 24-0.

The next stint of the game was classic Lions second half syndrome, allowing Luctonians to gather some momentum. Firstly Lions were caught napping at a penalty offence against the home side. Quick thinking from the visitors allowed some quick hands and quick feet with winger Norris running in their first try. Conversion successful.

Quickly the visitors responded to this lift in energy and worked hard finally scoring once again from a driving maul following a line out. It was Lock, Smith who touched down.

Luckily for the home side. their lapse of concentration was short lived and the Lions backs got into a great position 5 meters from the visitors line. A scrum option was chosen at a penalty and Lions pack drove over the line for Jack Gibbons to touch down at the back. Knight added the extras.

Substitute Veebel managed to score on his first touch of the ball on 68 minutes running over the try line from 40 yards out. Score 38-14.

Both sides were not holding back and the game seemed to speed up in the last 10 minutes. A final try for the Lions through number 10 Adam Greendale on 71 minutes came with much relief and reward for his hard work. When Knight converted the game was pretty much over.

Luctonians were not giving up though and the Lions were made to work to the end. A final score by Luctonians winger Drew Cheshire gave the visitors a small consolation at the end of a flowing game on a sunny afternoon.

A much need win for Leicester Lions to get the confidence back up after the hard 5 weeks previous spent on the road.

Final score 45-21.
