Lions bag 4 points at home

Leicester Lions were looking to continue their home form at the weekend as they played 3rd place in the league, Otley, after a disappointing loss last week away at Hull Ionians.

The Lions started the game with great pace and precision which left the visiting Otley side struggling to get into the game. A lack of discipline around the ruck area from the Lions led to a penalty early on which was converted by Otley’s Steve Depledge. Lions where down by 3 just 4 minutes into the game.

Lions quickly regained possession after the restart and found themselves with a scrum on the Otley 5m line. Lions pack overpowered their guests and eventually, after 2 dominant scrums, were rightfully awarded a penalty try which was converted by Michael Hogan 9 minutes into the game. Minutes later Lions found themselves back on the opposition 5m line after many phases, showing great ball retention. Again a similar story at scrum time and the Lions where awarded another penalty try 15 minutes in. Hogan converted again.

The rest of the half calmed down and both sides played some good rugby. Lions had a set back with second row Josh McLaurin receiving a yellow card. Lions where to see the rest of the half with 14 men but made no difference to the score line. 14-3 to the Lions.

The second half started slowly and both sides struggled to break the opposition defence. Although no score, both sides played some great rugby. On the hour mark Otley finally managed to put something together to break the Lions defence using some good handling skills for Otley’s Tom Rock to score in the corner. The conversation was missed and left the score at 14-8 and Otley within a score to steal the game in the last 15.

The Lions defence stood firm as the Otley side thought they were in for a steal. Nothing more was to come of the game in points, but a great a battle it was on the pitch as the Lions closed out the game to take the win.
