Early errors in the first and second half gave Chester an edge which Lions could not come back from

Lions were all change for the away game at Chester with coach, Ben Buxton, wanting to rotate the squad and give some game time to players who have not been involved the last few weeks.

In addition to these changes, injuries were coming in to play; Steve Cross had to pull out just before kick-off; meaning returning veteran, Jon Boden, had to move from 10 to 12; allowing on loan Leicester academy 10, John Hargreaves, to make his debut.

Leicester started the game on the back foot. Poor decision making led to Chester exploiting the visitors in attack and being successful on several occasions when arriving in the Leicester 22 through two early try’s and two penalties. As the game went on Leicester started playing their own pattern and came back into the game with a well worked try from the forwards. Converted by Boden.
Leicester were then on the ascendancy and Chester were losing their heads, losing the 10 due to retaliation on Leicester honorary lock Rob Young! The first half finished on the up with Leicester scoring a penalty just before the whistle. It was 18 – 10 at the break

The second half started like the first with discipline letting Leicester down. Chester converted two try’s, one of which was very early on in the half. This meant the visitors were chasing the game and a growing points deficit. Leicester never stopped trying and kept the ball well at times but unfortunately, did not have enough in the tank to make a comeback and the game finished 42 - 10.

Lots of positives can be taken into the game at home next week against local rivals Broadstreet. With a good week’s preparation and the return of key players, Leicester will be aiming for a 5 point haul to secure their position in the league.
