Tigers win the battle of the big cats

Lions came into the game on a high after the results against Ampthill and Stourbridge. In the earlier season meeting between the two teams Sedgley won 39 -20.

On a blustery day at Westleigh Park the visitors had the advantage of the wind in the first half and took advantage of it. A couple of early penalties presented themselves, one of which was converted. Lions then exerted some pressure of their own in the opposition half and were awarded a penalty and opted for a scrum. With a pushover try on the cards, Lions were deemed to be scrummaging illegally and were penalised, a let off for the Tigers. Sedgley came at Lions with some good running rugby from which they were awarded another penalty in the Lions 22 and Devon Constant was shown a yellow card. The penalty was converted and Lions now trailed 0-6. The man disadvanatge spurred the Lions on and they took the lead through John Murdoch who ran in unchallenged under the posts after some good phases of play. Daniel Burke added the extras. Sedgley moved ahead before half time with a converted try to lead 7-13 at the break.

Lions opened the scoring in the second half with an early Dan Burke penalty to cut the deficit to three points. It was then that Sedgley found joy out wide with winger Curtis Strong scoring his first followed shortly after the restart with his second. Lions came back and scored through Rob Young on 59 minutes and more Lions pressure led to another penalty from Daniel Burke 17-25. Sedgley put the game out of reach with another penalty shortly after.

Final score Leicester Lions RFC 17- 28 Sedgley Park RFC.

Lions need to recapture their form on the road next week with a trip to Huddersfield, who this week beat Stourbridge 12 – 24.
