For the second week running, Leicester Lions were without their captain Matt Tuckey. So Drew Rudkin stepped up again, albeit for about 35 minutes.
Lions started off the stronger of the two sides, applying plenty of pressure in the oppositions 22 and were rewarded with the first score of the day from a good kick return from full back Dave Williams. Caldy hit back with 2 penalties and a score of their own after a number of mistakes and ill discipline from the away side, leaving the score at 13-7.
After this lapse, Lions responded well and Jon Boden slipped through a gap in the Caldy defence before putting Steven Cross in under the posts. More ill discipline and mistakes allowed Caldy straight back into the game and they grabbed the next try. Matters were made worse as Drew Rudkin received a yellow card, albeit rather unfairly, on 33 minutes.
Half time score 20-14.
Shortly after the second half began Lions were camped on their own try line providing some very strong defence to a Caldy attack which lacked real direction.
Unfortunately, not too long after coming back on, the Leicester Lions captain received his second yellow card leaving them a man down for the last half an hour. Caldy made the most of the dismissal of Rudkin by bagging another try, taking the score to 27-14 in the home sides favour. The home side scored the next try too, taking the game away from Lions.
However, late on Devon Constant went over for a 3rd Leicester Lions try. This spurred them on to play some expansive rugby in the last few minutes in an attempt to score a 4th try to secure a bonus point. This came in vain as a loose pass which didn't go to hand enabled Caldy to score the last try of the day and rather flatter the scoreboard in their favour.
Final score Caldy 41 Leicester Lions 21.
Lions are back at home next week taking on Preston who also sit mid table.
